Privacy Policy for BeanBench

BeanBench is owned and operated by Mount Si Labs LLC, a Washington limited liability company ("BeanBench", "we", "our", or "us"). BeanBench is a specialty coffee logging and discovery app. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and protect your information.

Summary

  • Local Mode Only: Your app data stays on your device. The app doesn't collect it.
  • No Accounts: There is no account creation or login.
  • Website analytics: This website uses aggregate analytics to improve the site (see section 3).
  • Newsletter (optional): If you choose to subscribe, your email address is handled by Beehiiv to send you emails (see section 3.3). You can unsubscribe anytime.
  • We never sell your personal data.

1. Information We Collect

1.1 Local Data

All your data is stored locally on your device:

  • Brew logs, coffee beans, roasters, and grinder settings
  • App preferences and settings
  • Recipe selections and timer history

This data never leaves your device. We do not have access to your data, and we do not operate servers that collect user inputs.

1.2 iCloud Backup

If you back up your device to iCloud, your app data will be included in that backup. This is governed by Apple's Privacy Policy. We do not have direct access to these backups.

1.3 Automatically Collected Data

We do not collect personal analytics or usage data. The App Store may collect anonymous crash data if you have opted in to share analytics with developers via your iOS system settings.

2. How We Use Your Information

Since we do not collect your information, we do not use it. All processing (such as calculating brew ratios or grinder suggestions) happens locally on your device.

3. Third-Party Services & Analytics

3.1 In the app

The BeanBench app does not use third-party analytics services (like Google Analytics or Mixpanel). Processing happens locally on your device.

3.2 On this website

Our website, beanbench.coffee, uses analytics to understand aggregate traffic and improve the site:

  • Cloudflare Web Analytics — privacy-first and cookieless; it does not track you across sites and runs without requiring consent.
  • Google Analytics 4 — provided by Google. It loads in a consent-denied, cookieless state by default and only sets cookies or collects usage data such as pages viewed, approximate location, and device or browser after you accept in our cookie banner. See Google's Privacy Policy and its opt-out browser add-on.
  • Microsoft Clarity — provided by Microsoft for aggregate usage metrics, heatmaps, and session replay on a sample of visits. It loads only after you accept in our cookie banner; if you decline, it is never loaded. See Microsoft's Privacy Statement.

When you first visit, a banner lets you accept or decline analytics cookies, and Google Analytics and Microsoft Clarity stay off until you accept. You can change your choice anytime with the Cookie preferences link in the footer, or by blocking cookies in your browser. We use this data only in aggregate to improve the website, and we never sell your personal data.

The Favorites page also loads map tiles from OpenStreetMap and CARTO to show locations. These providers receive your IP address to serve the map images, as any website request does; the map sets no tracking cookies.

3.3 Newsletter

Our website offers an optional email newsletter. The signup form is provided by Beehiiv, an email platform based in the United States. If you subscribe, the email address you enter (and a confirmation that you opted in) is stored and processed by Beehiiv on our behalf solely to send you BeanBench updates and new brewing guides. We do not sell or share it for any other purpose. Every email includes a one-click unsubscribe link, and you can opt out at any time. See Beehiiv's Privacy Policy.

3.4 Coffee World Cup fan vote

The Coffee World Cup bracket includes an optional fan vote. If you cast one, we store an anonymous tally only: the country you picked and a random identifier generated in your browser (so you can vote once). We do not store your name, email, or IP address, and the vote is not linked to any other data. To keep out automated abuse, the vote is protected by Cloudflare Turnstile, a privacy-focused bot check that does not track you across sites. See Cloudflare's Privacy Policy. The aggregate vote counts are stored in Cloudflare D1. If you never vote, nothing is sent.

4. Children's Privacy

BeanBench does not knowingly collect personal information from children.
