Scores are editorial and heuristic, built to be argued with. Football qualification is real; the coffee ratings are one opinionated take on growing, peak cup, roasting, and story.
How the scoring works
Each country carries four scores from 0 to 100. Origin pedigree is about real growing: production, terroir, and traceable lots. Specialty ceiling is peak cup, the Geshas and Chirosos and Cup of Excellence lots. Roasting and cafe reputation covers roasters, baristas, competitions, and brew culture. Narrative is upset potential and the "I want to try that" factor.
A mode is just a set of weights on those four. Balanced spreads them out. Origin Purist leans on growing. Roaster Snob rewards cafe countries. Chaos puts story and peak cup first. The top 16 by score seed into the bracket, and the higher score wins each round, so a strong enough favorite runs the table.
The football field is set. The coffee scores are editorial and up for debate, informed by USDA FAS production data, World Coffee Research variety notes, and barista and roaster competition records.
