French Press Ratio Calculator
Scale a French press brew to your press. James Hoffmann's no-plunge technique is the default: steep, break the crust, skim, settle, and pour without pressing. Set your water or cup count and the dose and schedule follow. Clever Dripper recipes, including Hoffmann's iced version, are here too.
Getting a cleaner cup from immersion
The French press gets its reputation for sludge from plunging, not from the brewer. Hoffmann's technique trades ten patient minutes for a cup with body but no grit. The Clever Dripper reaches a similar place with a paper filter and a valve, and its iced version is one of the easiest cold coffees to make well.
Immersion extraction is driven by time, temperature, and grind. If the cup tastes flat or harsh at a new size, check grind size and water temperature before changing the ratio. The BeanBench app has these recipes built in with a guided timer.
